Housing Catalyst is proud to celebrate longtime Mason Place resident Dallas Watson, who was honored with the Meritorious Service Citation at the Fort Collins Police Services Awards Ceremony on January 29, 2026. Presented to individuals who make a meaningful difference in our Fort Collins community, the award recognizes the positive contributions Dallas brings to those around him.

As Dallas reflected on receiving this honor, he shared:

Receiving this award has been the proudest moment of my life, and it speaks so highly of how I have tried to be a voice and advocate for the homeless community.

But in my heart, I truly feel as though the true recipients of this award should be the ones who were there to give me strength when I had none, and who, through their patience and kindness, gave me hope that there was a better life for me than the hell I had been living so far. If not for the wonderful people of Mason Place, whom I now see as my family, I know I would not be here to accomplish the things I have. So to them, I dedicate this award and my appreciation.

Courage in Sharing His Personal Story

For several years, Dallas has partnered with the Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) to share his lived experience of being unhoused in our community. Through his speaking engagements, Dallas openly shares his life journey, including surviving childhood abuse, attending college, and the deep influence of his close relationship with his grandfather. Following his grandfather’s passing, Dallas experienced significant mental health challenges and substance use struggles that ultimately led to a period of homelessness.

While unhoused, Dallas faced repeated trauma and frequent interactions with law enforcement, experiences that deeply shaped his perspective. After this period, he secured housing at Mason Place. Although the transition was challenging at first—and included continued struggles with substance use and behavioral concerns— Dallas made the decision to enter a 30-day treatment program. Since then, he has maintained long-term sobriety and stability.

Helping New Police Recruits Save Lives

Today, Dallas’s story is shared with new police recruits to help humanize the unhoused experience and reinforce the importance of compassion, patience, and understanding in law enforcement interactions. His lived experience serves as a powerful reminder that respectful, trauma-informed responses can truly save lives. Dallas now serves on the Lived Experience Advisory Council and contributes to multiple boards and councils throughout the community, continuing to advocate for dignity, connection, and hope.

FCPS Sergeant Annie Hill, who nominated Dallas for the Meritorious Service Citation, praised his selflessness and courage in sharing his personal story with the cadets from the last six Fort Collins Police Academy sessions, as well as many others, helping inspire people to be the best versions of themselves.

“Dallas has generously shared his lived experience with mental health challenges, addiction, and homelessness to help our officers lead with greater understanding and compassion,” said FCPS Chief of Police, Jeff Swoboda. “His courage, resilience, and commitment to uplifting others make him an inspiring presence in our community, and I was pleased to present Dallas with the Meritorious Service Citation.”
